Grants and SR&ED
What is SR&ED?
SR&ED (Scientific Research and Experimental Development) is a federal tax incentive run by the Canada Revenue Agency. It returns part of what a business spends on work that tries to solve technical problems, such as developing or improving a product or process.
Does my company qualify for SR&ED?
You might, if your team tried to solve a technical problem where the answer was not known at the start. Company size does not matter, and many small manufacturers qualify for work they think of as everyday problem-solving. Book a demo and we will look at your projects with you.
Can I claim SR&ED for projects that failed?
Often, yes. SR&ED rewards the attempt to resolve a technical uncertainty, not a successful result. Trials that did not work are frequently the strongest evidence that the work was experimental.
What records do I need for SR&ED?
Records made during the work carry the most weight: test results, design notes, drawings, photos, emails and time records that show who worked on what. We help you set up simple habits so the evidence is there when you claim.
Is there a deadline to claim SR&ED?
Yes. The claim must be filed within a set time after your tax year ends, and late claims are not accepted. Talk to us well before your filing date so there is time to prepare it properly.
What is the difference between a grant and a tax credit?
A grant is usually approved before the work starts, for a specific project. A tax credit like SR&ED is claimed after the work is done, through your tax return. Many companies use both.
Which other grants could my business get?
Depending on your plans, programs such as IRAP, CanExport and the BC Employer Training Grant may fit, along with other federal and provincial funding. Programs open and close often, so we check what is available for your project when we talk.
How do your fees work?
Fees depend on the project and are agreed in writing before any work starts. Book a demo and we will explain how we would charge for your project.
Buying or selling a business
Will my sale be kept confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality comes first for sellers. We share details only with buyers you approve, and only once they have agreed to keep them private.
Can you help me buy or sell a business?
Yes. We work with both buyers and sellers of small businesses. We advise on the deal and make the right connections, including finding and assessing the right building or space.
Can you help find a building for my business?
Yes. Finding and assessing the right space is part of our deal work. We look at whether a building suits the operation, including layout, power, loading, permitted use and lease terms.
When should I start preparing to sell my business?
Earlier than most owners expect. Clean financial records, documented processes and customer relationships that do not depend only on you all make a business easier to sell at a fair price.
What should I check before buying a business?
Look closely at the financial records, customer base, equipment condition, leases, permits and staff. We help buyers spot hidden problems before they commit.
Facility setup
Do I need a permit for tenant improvements?
Usually, yes, for changes to walls, electrical, plumbing, ventilation or how the space is used. Rules differ by city, so we check what applies before you commit to a timeline.
What does ISO 9001 certification involve?
You set up a documented quality system, run it, check it with internal audits and then pass an audit by a certification body. We help design a system that fits how your shop already works, train your staff and prepare you for the audit.
What does facility setup include?
Tenant improvements, permits, business licensing, and certification such as ISO 9001 quality systems. You deal with one team that knows both the factory floor and the paperwork.
What should I check before signing a lease for a new facility?
Check that the space allows your type of work, that power, ceiling height and loading suit your equipment, and what improvements the landlord will cover. Sorting this out before you sign avoids costly surprises.
